The project

Emily Riskas is a director of photography. The brief was a portfolio that matched the quality and intention of her film work, where every interaction feels deliberate and every animation serves the story rather than decorating it. That is a harder brief than it sounds, because the obvious moves on a cinematography site all pull toward spectacle, and spectacle is exactly what a DP's reel does not need competing with it.

So the restraint is the design. Motion is used to control pacing, not to announce itself; the reel is given room and silence around it; typography and negative space carry the personality between pieces. It doubles as a service hub, so the enquiry path had to live inside that mood without breaking it. No modal shouting, no sticky bar following you down the page.

The thinking behind the build

Help a producer picture the next collaboration.

Emily’s portfolio is a selection tool for a creative commission. It needs to communicate visual judgement across commercial, documentary and narrative work, then make the move from watching to discussing a production feel natural.

  1. Step 01

Give a shared portfolio link a strong first impression

Whether someone receives the portfolio directly or discovers it through search, the opening work needs to establish Emily’s visual language quickly. The site is built around the films themselves, rather than asking a producer to read a sales pitch before seeing them.

  2. Step 02

Let a specific film establish the fit

A producer needs to assess more than a striking opening frame. Individual work gives them a way to consider tone, subject matter and the kind of production they are planning. The order of projects can make a particular direction more visible.

  3. Step 03

Move into an actual production conversation

The current contact page opens an email with a project enquiry subject and asks about the project, goals and timeline. That gives a producer room to describe the production in their own words and share references directly.

  4. Step 04

Curate for the briefs worth pursuing

The next portfolio review can draw on the films prospective collaborators mention and the types of briefs received. If the aim is more documentary work, the selection and project context should make that capability easy to assess.

    Evaluate the conversation

An email-link click does not tell us whether a brief was sent or a commission agreed. The useful outcome is in the production conversation, alongside any available portfolio viewing data.

Under the hood

Video presentation, responsive layout and interface motion are considered together so the work remains central on different screens. The contact page opens a project enquiry email and asks for the production, goals and timeline.

A portfolio that gets out of the way. The restraint is the whole point, and it's the hardest thing to hold on to when the subject of the site is images that move.
